7 AI & Machine Learning Trends Set to Explode This Year

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the common denominator among all cutting-edge technology you will find today. With tech giants, businesses and government leaders focused on advancing AI, what was once reserved for the realm of science fiction is now available for everyone.  As we prepare to witness a significant advancement within the AI space in 2018, here are the AI trends on our radar!

Natural Language Recognition

Ask any AI researcher what one of their long standing goals are, and language recognition will likely be their answer; after all, it’s the way we communicate. As natural language generation and algorithms understand us better, the way we communicate with machines will continue to shift towards voice recognition. Just last year, Amazon decided to focus their efforts on training Alexa to recognize speech patterns that can help detect suicidal tendencies. More developers will focus their efforts on conversational technology, specifically affective computing (or emotion AI) which will put an emphasis on emotional sensitivity, as well as machine translation technology.

Fighting For Health

Using AI for medical research, diagnosis and treatment will also be significant in 2018. Artificial intelligence will facilitate everything from data mining, analysis of medical records, identification of cancerous cells to spotting anomalies in medical images using image recognition algorithms. Moreover, AI robotic assistants such as virtual nurses, who will be able to recognize warning signs, are soon to become a vivid reality. In London, Google’s DeepMind Health Project is mining through digital scans and medical records from Moorfields Eye Hospital to better diagnose eye diseases – and this is just one example!

Battle of the Chips

In 2018, tech powerhouses such as Intel, Nvidia and IBM will race to determine who will create the ultimate hardware to dictate the AI hardware landscape. Research and Markets predicted that the global AI chip market will grow 54.25% by 2021! New chips, with specialized hardware customized for machine-learning algorithms, will make modern deep learning significantly cheaper, faster and more powerful. Who do you think will sit atop of the AI chip throne?

Reinventing Offline Retail

Technology has also seamlessly integrated into our everyday retail spaces. Did you know a number of large retailers have started to use offline data to learn everything about our behavior and preferences using AI? In Amazon Go grocery stores, for instance, you are required to set up an Amazon account and download the Amazon Go app. Sensors are placed on shelves to track which item you pick up and measure how long you hold it for; beacons are also installed to track our movements in order to get a holistic sense of what we are doing in the store. Through this data, Amazon will get a better sense of our preferences and motivations, so that maybe one day it can just auto-order our groceries for us!

Decentralized AI

Although AI is improving at a rapid pace, the market is becoming monopolized by companies like Microsoft, Google and IBM, who provide AI and machine learning solutions through a centralized model. This is problematic because of unfair pricing and a lack of transparency; we don’t know how AIs are working in the background so we lose control of the content we consume. The good news is that we have an emerging decentralized AI market!

Basically, decentralized AI can do similar things as a centralized AI network, but these AI could be utilized on local devices or applications without the cloud. Apple have just introduced CoreML, a machine learning framework that can be implemented into any app; CoreML makes it possible for IoT devices to run complicated AI algorithms. These complex algorithms include special features like face detection and language identification.

Rise of Facial Recognition

Facial recognition is becoming a hot topic worldwide; it works by identifying individuals through a massive database of digital images. By combining AI with millions of pictures of our faces, mathematical representations called embedding could be created of our appearances. Just during the recent Chinese New Year, police forces in China were using high-tech sunglasses to scan travelers and captured seven wanted criminalsAccording to Professor Michal Kosinki from Stanford University, AI can eventually detect whether a person is straight or gay. Sounds crazy right? Apparently, characteristics of our faces can identify our political view, IQ level, and even personality!

Intelligent Apps

Expect a whole new generation of intelligent apps based on cognitive computing, AI and Deep Learning. These apps will be able to create functionalities by themselves, without developers explicitly coding for it; they will also be able to make better recommendations, detect fraud, enable smart search and abstract huge amounts of data. One great example is Movix  – an intelligent web application that uses AI to learn what your favorite movies are. By giving the algorithms a few of your favorite movies, it will be able to suggest movies that you will most likely love!

While this list is by no means exhaustive, it does provide us with good insights into the direction that AI is heading. We’re proud to say Ambi Climate is also part of the AI revolution – see how we use AI to improve your life!
