With everything getting smarter, our homes are no exception. The Smart Home market has exploded – with a reported triple-digital growth of smart home appliances in 2017 – and was the name of the game at the annual 2018 Consumer Electronic Show.

Tech has never looked so cool and wacky, yet promising. Many disruptive tech products and trends were unveiled at this year’s CES, giving us an idea of what’s next for the Smart Home tech space.

Voice Assistants

The headline story of 2017 was the rise of the voice assistant, with products compatible with Alexa found pretty much everywhere. With a huge influx of cloud integrations, improvements in natural language processing as well as the increasing presence of assistants in our smartphones – such as Google Pixel 2 XL’s “squeeze to speak” feature and Samsung’s updated A.I. assistant Bixby 2.0 – expect voice control to be the primary driver for the Smart Home in the year ahead.

Living Room

Aibo (Source: Aibo/Sony)

This year, LG unveiled the world’s first 88-inch OLED TV display with 8K resolution, and we can’t wait to see the exciting potential of smart TVs for the future. With that announced, couch life is also about to get smarter with Miliboo’s connected sofa, that’s fully equipped with motion sensors to eliminate your slouching and tracks the time you spend in front of the TV.

Another surprising trend this year will be the throwback of “retrofuturistic” robots, notably: Laundroid that folds your clothes, Cutii designed specifically for elderly care, as well as a comeback of Sony’s once-beloved Aibo robot dog that contains touch sensors, able to display various emotions and recognizes your family members through the camera on its nose.

Bedroom & Bathroom

Kohler’s Numi Toilet (Source: Kohler)

Sleep tech is flooding the Smart Home market with new, improved sleeping solutions. Noteworthy sleep tech include: Zeeq Smart Pillow that claims to wake you up at the optimal point of your sleep cycle, Ambi Climate that will adjust your room temperature throughout the night for better sleep comfort, and Magniflex’s smart bed that stops your snoring at night.

The bathroom, more specifically the toilet, is not getting left out of the Smart Home trend either. Kohler’s Numi Toilet allows you to not only interact with it via your bum, but also your voice! You can ask it to “flush”, but if you forget to do so, it will flush anyway. It will also adjust the seat temperature to your liking, let you play music from its speakers and choose the color of ambient lighting!

Samsung Family Hub Smart Refrigerator (Source: Samsung)

When it comes to Smart Home, the kitchen is all about connected appliances that not only talk to you, but to each other. The smarts could range from Whirlpool’s WTW8700EC Smart Cabrio washing machine, for which you can ask Alexa how much time is left on a cycle, to the Samsung Family Hub Smart Refrigerator that works with Bixby and contains a smart TV that can play music, find recipes, and more. One smart kitchen appliance to look out for this year is Frigondas, that seeks to reinvent microwaves; it can heat up your food like a regular microwave, but also “blast chill” foods – including cooling drinks and rapidly freeze fresh food, just in a matter of minutes.

Home Security

Last but not least, home security is continuing to be a hot topic for 2018, and for a good reason; it is projected to be a $47 billion market globally by 2020. Some smart security products that caught us off guard, include Blink Video Doorbell that offers two years of battery life and the new Aura motion sensors, which unlike typical sensors, detect movements by monitoring disturbances in wireless signals that circulate through your Smart Home.  There have also been rumors at this year’s CES that a few companies are also considering on integrating your car security system to your existing smart home security system, to detect if someone is breaking into your car.

What Else?

These are by no means the only trends to look for, but one thing’s for sure: with the ever-evolving dynamics of the Smart Home market, we can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store!
